South West - Projects Transforming Communities
Across the South West, projects inspired by the Christian faith are having a transformational effect on local communities.  Faithworks celebrates and promotes this work in order to encourage and empower other churches and Christians to rediscover their role at the heart of their community. 

Open Door International Language School, Plymouth
This Christian motivated language school supports and enables Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Migrant Workers to fully participate within their local community.   It teaches English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to 360 students each week from 64 different nations as well as providing free childcare for students, vocational training, social interaction, pastoral support and teacher training.  The project also seeks to influence local, regional and national policy in the area of asylum and is the only faith organisation involved in the DfES Citizenship Pilot. The project was shortlisted for a Faithworks award in 2007 and you can find out more about the school at www.odils.com

Bath Youth for Christ
This Youth for Christ centre offers weekly skateboarding sessions for young people across the city and out of this provision has grown a range of other projects. Graff gives young grafitti artists a place to channel their skills and this innovative project has seen the amount of illegal graffitti drop dramatically. Also the staff have developed a basics of Christianity course called Switch. This course addresses the core issues of faith in a culturally relevant way for skaters. Fearnheath Play Association, Bournemouth
Shortlisted for the Improving the Lives of Children and Young People's Award in 2007, Fernheath Play Association is a long running charity based on a post war council estate in Bournemouth. They offer a safe, supervised place for children of school age to play, during out of school hours all year round. There is a varied programme of outdoor and indoor activities aiming to keep children healthily active, constructively and creatively occupied, improving self esteem, helping social skills, providing an opportunity for integrated play, and a refuge from stressful situations.

Fusion Youth Centre, Bournemouth
Fusion Youth Centre has been operating for 8 years and was a shortlisted project in the Improving the Lives of Children and Young People's Award in 2007. Fusion run a drop in centre for young people, aged 14-18, in Bournemouth which provides access to sports, music and media projects.  Around 100-200 young people attend Fusion, many of whom live in hostel accommodation and are not in education, employment or training.  It is also accessed by up to another 200 Millennium Volunteers. 

It implements a youth led approach with young people managing resources and budgets for specific projects, and successfully applying for funding. One young person is elected to a paid position of Fusion President each year.  This post enables young people to voice their opinion to other young people, staff and the partnership group. Shine Girl, Bournemouth
Shortlisted for the Faithworks Spring Harvest Community Innovation Award for New Projects 2006. Shine Girl is based on the Townsend Estate (a Priority Policing Area), this is a self-esteem course for year seven and eight girls. It is run in conjunction with the local secondary school, as part of the PHSE curriculum.

The Open Blue Trust, Wiltshire
Shortlisted for the Faithworks Spring Harvest Community Innovation Award for Developing Projects 2006. This church-run project seeks to cover gaps in service provision in small hamlets of rural Wiltshire, identified by the Rural Needs Initiative. The church has developed an effective solution to the lack of community facilities by refurbishing a double decker bus. 

One 25 Limited, Bristol
Shortlisted for the Faithworks Congregational Community Excellence Award 2006. Founded by several Christian churches in St Paul’s, One 25 Limited is recognised as the lead local agency for dealing with the multifaceted problems of prostitution. Through street outreach and drop-in sessions, they offer practical support and care to women trapped in street prostitution.

FOOD BANK (The Trussell Trust)
Set up by the Trussell Trust in December 2000, the FOOD BANK is a response to a need in the Salisbury area. The project collects and distributes food to people in crisis and works with them to help break the cycle of poverty. In 2004/5 the FOOD BANK handled 23 tonnes of food, providing 3 days food for over 1600 adults and 1100 children as well as other local institutions. This project was shortlisted for the Faithworks Community Resource Award 2004, and as a result has now been launched UK wide as a network with new FOOD BANKs opened in Redruth, Calne, Gloucester, Milton Keynes, Swindon and Inverness, with more on the way in Andover, Bude, Bath, Worthing, Poole and elsewhere.  Link to www.trusselltrust.org.  

The FOOD BANK in Redruth was seeded by the Trussell Trust and is led by the Emmanuel Full Gospel Church. Emergency food has been distributed to people in crisis in South West Cornwall since March 2005.
