South East - Projects Transforming Communities
Across the South East, projects inspired by the Christian faith are having a transformational effect on local communities.  Faithworks celebrates and promotes this work in order to encourage and empower other churches and Christians to rediscover their role at the heart of their community.

Shinewater Shaftesbury Centre, Eastbourne
This centre offers debt advice, councelling, advise and help with benefit, insurance, bill queries for free to residents of the Shinewater estate in Eastbourne. The centre employs one part time manager, all other staff are volunteers and the whole project runs on just £22,000. The drop in centre is just one of a number of services this ecumenical church project runs. The centre was featured in "Faith works in..." St Luke’s Advice Service, Brighton
St Luke's was the commended project for the 2007 Community Inclusion Award. This project provides free and independent legal advice and representation on issues of personal debt and welfare benefits.  They support those who appear to have been incorrectly refused benefits, enabling them to appeal and be heard at tribunal.  They have a high success rate, and the amount of money involved makes a significant impact in the life of the client.They also help people to complete welfare benefit forms correctly.  The project supports those who are particularly at risk from social exclusion and empowers them to feel more in control of their life. For more information visit www.stlukesadviceservice.org.uk

The Foyer - Oasis Trust, Surrey
The Foyer at Croydon was established in 2000 to provide temporary accommodation for young people aged 18-25 who found themselves homeless. The Foyer provides more than just accommodation and for many residents it’s the first place that they can truly call ‘home.’

Each resident at the Foyer receives a tailored programme of support covering basic life skills such as cooking and budgeting as well as the opportunity to gain a number of skills for employment or education. All this is geared up to set them up for life and move on into independent living. To find out more click here

Groundswell Trust, Southampton
Groundswell provides home based support for people living with HIV in Southampton and its surrounding area.  They provide free and confidential practical care giving those that they visit psychological and emotional support as well as helping them to access other services. The practical care includes gardening, decorating, providing transport, prescription collection and advocacy. The project seeks to give people living with HIV a voice, empowering them to overcome social isolation, improve self esteem and gain independence. Lifespace, Brighton
Lifespace were shortlisted for the Improving the Lives of Children and Young People's award in 2007. They provide mentoring and mediation for vulnerable young people aged 11-18 to improve their self-worth and equip them with life skills. They work in schools, colleges, training centres and other community locations working with 100-120 young people each year to improve self-esteem through mentoring, enabling them to resolve conflict healthily and raise levels of achievement academically and relationally.  They receive referrals from 6 local secondary schools, Connexions, the police, social services and Youth Offending Teams. 

Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team
Winner of the Faithworks Spring Harvest Community Innovation Award for Developing Projects 2006. This Chaplaincy team is an integral part of the emergency service response to suicide attempts at Beachy Head.  The team performs nightly patrols 365 days a year and is on-call to Sussex Police 24 hours a day.  They talk down would-be jumpers down and provide After Care services including a safe house, trained listeners, counselling, befrienders and advice on debt and housing. For more information visit www.bhct.org.uk

Off The Fence, Hove
Delivers a wide range of services to vulnerable people in Brighton and Hove. These include outreach to the homeless, advice and support to women involved in street prostitution, providing advocacy to families at risk, aid with the transition to independent living for young people who are leaving 24 hour care, running Christian lunch clubs in schools and operating a phone support line for those who have left home or run away and need help and advice. Worthing Churches Homeless Project, Worthing
Provides support for local homeless people by running a day centre within self care facilities and training. This project also runs two hostels for its clients – one on a short-term basis, the other on a longer term.  WCHP was awarded the Faithworks Community Resource Award 2005. Derwent Day Centre, Tonbridge, Kent
Derwent Day Centre is based at Tonbridge Baptist Church providing an invaluable day care service for older vulnerable people living in the local community. It has been running for about 18 months and during this time has built up to capacity of 20 clients each Wednesday and Thursday. The project is staffed by volunteers showing Christian care in action. The WIRE Project, Littlehampton
The WIRE project was set up in 1996. Working in partnership with various local organisations, the project manager shared a passion to see the regeneration of a run-down estate. The WIRE now runs a wealth of community building activities, employing 20 people with over 200 volunteers, many of whom have been trained for their work. www.thewireproject.com for more information.

The Community Debt Advice Centre, Burgess Hill
Debt is endemic in our society. We live in an age in which owing huge sums of money is not only commonplace, it is the norm. It is alarmingly easy for the debts we take for granted to get out of hand. The Community Advice Centre exists to help people from the Burgess Hill area manage their debts.
