Scotland - Projects Transforming Communities

Across Scotland, projects inspired by the Christian faith are having a transformational effect on local communities.  Faithworks celebrates and promotes this work in order to encourage and empower other churches and Christians to rediscover their role at the heart of their community.

Sunflower Garden Project – CrossReach
Based in Edinburgh this pioneering Christian project was the Winner of the 2007 Improving the Lives of Children and Young People Award. Sunflower works with children affected by drug and alcohol use in their families, through individual and group support, play work and infant massage.  The project, which has been running since 2003, seeks to break the pattern of intergenerational substance misuse. www.sunflowergarden.org.uk

Ness Youth Centre, Isle of Lewis
Ness Youth Centre was the commended project in the 2007 Community Commitment Award. They set up as a response to the need for a local, safe and social place for young people in this remote area to spend their evenings. It serves 14 villages in a remote district, where the nearest similar facility is 30 miles away.  The café and sports centre were originally set up on a small grant in 2004, the project now has a turnover of £1,100. 

Sanctuary in the City, Glasgow
Shortlisted for the Faithworks Spring Harvest Community Innovation Award for New Projects in 2006. The vision for this initiative is a 24/7 youth café based in the centre of Glasgow. The café is just entering into operation and is intended to be a place of sanctuary, with professional Christian youth workers on hand throughout the day and night. www.sanctuaryinthecity.org.uk

Richmonds Hope, Edinburgh
In 2003 a child bereavement centre based in Craigmillar, Edinburgh was the recipient of the first Spring Harvet Faithworks Award.   This innovative and transformational community project, 'Richmond's Hope' run by Richmond Craigmillar Church provides support for children aged 4 –12 who have been deeply affected by traumatic bereavement.  For more about Richmond's Hope visit www.richmondshope.org.uk.

Turning Point Craft Initiative, Shetland
In 2004 a day centre based in Shetland offering counselling and practical woodwork and woodturning skills was awarded the Faithworks Spring Harvest Community Innovation Award.  'Turning Point Craft Initiative' seeks to enable individuals to regain and retain a quality of life lost through alcohol and/or drug misuse.  For more about Turning Point Craft Initiative go to www.tpci.shetland.co.uk.

In 2004 Community House, a centre offering a wide programme of activities in Alloa was shortlisted for the Faithworks Community Resource Award.  For more about Community House visit www.clacksnet.org.uk/hosted/ch/

In 2005 Ayr Ark, an alcohol free, under-18s nightclub, was shortlisted for the Faithworks Community Innovation Award and commended for excellence. www.ayrark.co.uk

Blue Horizon, Aberdeen supports and inspires vulnerable adolescents developing self-worth, social skills, forming positive life choices and lifestyles, and providing support within the family context.  It was established out of a partnership between two Church of Scotland Parishes and the Catholic parish in 2005 after considerable consultation in the local community and with young people. Their project New Horizons helps young people test their potential and widen their horizons through practical experiences across a mixture of outdoor, social service, arts, sports and cross cultural opportunities.   Their Peru Expedition won Aberdeen City Council’s 2006 Top Award for a Project of Outstanding Educational Achievement. www.bluehorizonyouth.org.uk

The Bethany Christian Trust runs a holistic programme of emergency help, housing and training supporting for homeless people in Edinburgh.  It has been featured in the Faithworks books, Stories of Hope and 100 Proven Ways to Transform Your Community both by Steve Chalke. The ANSWER Project has been providing day care for older people with dementia since 1994.  MSP Mary Mulligan recently officiated the opening of a new centre for the project based in Whitburn, West Lothian which will allow the dementia care service to be offered to thirty six older people over three days living. The project was awarded Volunteer Organisation of 2006 by the West Lothian Volunteer Centre.  www.answer-project.com
