Janet: My Faithworks

“To realise that I could serve God wherever I am working was a real revelation.”

Janet Narh – broadcaster, campaigner and lay church leader

Ghana-born Janet Narh (41) trained as a lawyer, but after ten years moved into broadcasting, specialising in current affairs and news issues. She presents the Woman’s Hour slot on Ben Television, a satellite channel aimed at Africans in the UK, and also spends much of her time supporting and campaigning for women’s equality causes in Africa.

“I decided to go into the media so that I could play a better role in society – the media has such a great influence and it was a wonderful opportunity to use that responsibly to create positive change,” she says. “My show looks at women’s issues, and I hope to be able to make African women living in the UK more aware of issues affecting them.

“Many people in this industry don’t mention that they’re a Christian on their CV, but if someone isn’t happy with who I am, then that is their problem. I’m a confident African Christian in the UK, and my faith motivates me to help bring richness to the diversity we have in this country.”

When she isn’t broadcasting or campaigning, Janet is also a lay leader at her local church, supporting the clergy and providing pastoral care to those around her.
“As lay leaders we are a kind of a bridge between the clergy and the public, because we’re working in the world and have first-hand experience of very practical everyday issues that some clergy perhaps might not. It’s a great responsibility but it’s important to remember that church isn’t the only place where we serve God. Whether you’re sweeping the floor or being a minister in Parliament, you can do God’s work wherever you are. To realise that I could serve God wherever I am working was a real revelation.”
