Highfields Happy Hens

Etwall, Derby

Highfields Happy Hens is a practical Christian initiative working with young offenders and youngsters excluded from school – often unable to read, write or count. The hens, the eggs and the Christian staff provide an atmosphere that heals.

Although prayer time and the giving of Gideon Bibles has been ‘questioned’, both the local education authority and the youth offending service accept that miracles happen at Highfields.

Angry hands that break eggs become gentle hands; young people who cannot count want to know how many eggs they have just collected and even calculate production graphs; bad language and violent behaviour soon disappear. We also have a good record of youngsters going back to school or on to college. We seem to have found an answer to a massive and growing national problem and a peaceful solution in an area that few would dare to go.

The marketing of our eggs has involved local churches, schools and community groups in a wonderful way.
