Steve Chalke, Founder of Faithworks

Steve Chalke founded Faithworks, which began as a campaign in February 2001

Steve was ordained as a Baptist Minister in 1981, having studied at Spurgeon’s Theological College in London, and was a local minister for four years before setting up Oasis, the lead partner of Faithworks, in 1985.

In 2001, Steve laid the foundations of the Faithworks Movement and in 2003 became senior minister of Christ Church & Upton Chapel. Church.co.uk Waterloo, as it is now known was first in the Oasis vision to develop a church network around the UK that aspire to be, open 24/7, global in impact and holistic to the local community. No stranger to the media, Steve is a regular contributor across a whole genre of programmes and articles. He writes monthly columns for Prima Baby on fatherhood and publishes in Christianity on leadership.

Steve has had his own series on ITV and BBC as well as presenting a regular show, Changing Places, for BBC Radio 4.

A well-known speaker and author, Steve has over 40 published books to his name, ‘Change Agents – 25 hard-learned lessons in the art of getting things done’, being the most recent. Other Faithworks books include Intelligent Church: A Journey Towards Christ-Centred Community, 100 Proven Ways to Transform Your Community, Intimacy and Involvement, Faithworks Unpacked, Stories of Hope and Faithworks.

In 2004 Steve was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for his services to social inclusion.

In 2005 Steve became the official holder of the Guinness World Record for the largest amount of sponsorship money ever raised by an individual through a single event. He broke this record by raising £1.25 million for Oasis' work with schools in disadvantaged communities, through running the London Marathon. His record was beaten at the following year's marathon by Sir Steve Redgrave, who officially raised over £1.785 million. However in 2007 Steve recaptured his title, as well as becoming the fastest money-generating sports person in history, by raising over £1.855 million in 3 hours 58 minutes 40 seconds.

From early days Steve and Oasis have been involved in the provision of education not only in the UK but also in South America, Asia and Africa. As a development of this, in 2004 Steve set up Oasis Community Learning as part of the Oasis Group of charities, in order to deliver secondary education through the Academies Programme. There are currently 9 Oasis Academies with several more in the pipeline. www.oasiscommunitylearning.org

Steve is husband to Cornelia and father to Emily, Daniel, Abigail and Joshua.
