Changing Communities

Effective Community Development

Communities cannot be changed by others.  For change to be lasting, it has to involve the support and goodwill of the community itself.  Christian community development remembers this at all times.

This seminar stream, facilitated by Shaftesbury community mission team and guests, will explore the key principles of good community development.  It will also explore the nuts and bolts of getting involved in the community and will provide examples of partnership working.  The stream will help those thinking about getting involved in the community as well as those who have already started, by setting out some of the lessons learned by practitioners and how theory relates to doing work on the ground.  This is a hands-on seminar stream for those eager to engage effectively.

Fran Beckett, CEO of the Church Urban Fund, led the main session on Changing Communities.

Changing Communities From The Bottom Up
Christian community development is more than just ‘helping’ the needy.  It’s about empowering people to make change happen.  This seminar will look at how we can change our communities by finding out what the real needs are and then creatively responding to them.  You will leave inspired by what is possible!

Changing Communities Through Working Together
‘If you want to go fastest, go alone; if you want to go furthest, go together’.  Changing communities means working with other groups such as the council, police, other organisations (and even other churches!)  But can clear vision be combined with a partnership approach? Does our mission get watered down if we work together? Come and get creative ideas for working together!

Changing Communities For The Long Term
Too much Christian social action has been a hit and run job.  But short-term commitment has short-term results and can leave people more disillusioned than ever.  What are the ingredients for long-term change that lasts and making our community work sustainable?
