E5 Enterprise Ltd

Hackney, London

Hackney varies enormously. Half-a-million pound homes stand next door to damp and noisy bedsits. What is the radical calling of a community of Christians living here?

Clapton Park United Reformed Church, based at Hackney’s Round Chapel, loves celebrating: gathering people from every section of our neighbourhood of 20 streets to eat together. September 2004 marked the 90th consecutive monthly ‘community meal’.

In 1999 Clapton Park URC set up E5 Enterprise, a company  wholly owned by the church. Having experimented with a food co-op in a local shop, E5 Enterprise, a new catering and events business combines our impulse to celebrate, extends our local links, gives our existing ‘food events’ new impetus and makes profit that can be used to support our community action agenda.

Our collective spending powers can be harnessed. The church is responding to the challenge of ‘jubilee’ -  rich and poor in this urban village bound together in a new future.
