Involvement in Decision Making

Since its launch in 2001, the Faithworks movement has continued to call on the government to ensure that faith groups, and in particular churches, have a greater say in the policies that affect their community.

Central and local government have begun to realise that churches and Christian organisations are often very active in delivering services to the local community. In many cases, they are fulfilling specific Government policy aims such as social inclusion, active citizenship and social capital.

However, too often, these groups have not been consulted when it comes to drawing up policies that impact their communities. The Home Office report, entitled Working Together: Cooperation between Government and Faith Communities, recognised some of these issues and addressed some of the ways they could be resolved. The report recommended that faith groups should have a greater level of involvement in the drawing up of public policies. It also proposed that less established Christian traditions, such as black-majority churches and free churches, should be involved in Government consultations.

Faithworks is involved in regular consultations with policy makers in the Home Office, the DTI, the ODPM and regional and local government, to ensure that the voice of churches and Christian activists working at a grass roots level in the community is heard.
