The Story So Far

How faithworks began

In the months leading up to the 2001 General Election, the Oasis Trust initiated a campaign calling on the incoming Government to recognise the vital contribution that churches and Christian projects make to local communities and to end discriminatory practices against them in areas like funding and partnership.

The Faithworks Campaign gathered momentum with the backing of several prominent Christian leaders and the support of a number of MPs. It culminated in the submission of a 70,000-strong petition to 10 Downing Street in June 2001.

"Together we have thrown down the gauntlet to the Government. Today we handed the Prime Minister the signatures of 70,000 Christians from every denomination and region who took him at his word when he said that he wants to work with us. We now await his response and stand ready to help to deliver strong partnerships that will serve the neediest members of every community ”  Steve Chalke, Faithworks Founder
