'Welcoming the Stranger'
Households in Bradford, Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle upon Tyne (and elsewhere) are responding to the biblical call to 'provide the poor wanderer with shelter' (Is 58:7). They are opening their homes and their hearts to some of the estimated 283,500  'refused' asylum seekers in the UK - people from countries such as Zimbabwe, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Congo, whose applications for refugee status have failed but who believe that their lives will be in danger if they are forced to return home. The majority are not eligible for any state benefits or housing - and are not allowed to work.

If you would like to find out more about hosting projects in one of the cities listed above, please contact Will Sutcliffe from the BEACON project in Bradford (01274 721626 / 7277525) and he will put you in touch.

Micah Sunday 08

In 2000 we made a commitment to the poor amongst us.  World leaders signed up to the Millennium Development Goals – 8 goals to halve global poverty by 2015.  Those same leaders are making decisions right now which determine whether these goals will be met.  On October 19 stand together with thousands of churches worldwide in prayer that the firm commitments we’ve made won’t become broken promises.  Be part of Micah Sunday.  www.micahchallenge.org.uk/micahsunday

National Breakfast Bar Award for First Stop Breakfast Bar, Hitchin, Hertfordshire
First Stop Breakfast Bar, a community project run by Hitchin Christian Centre has won a National Breakfast Club Award for the category of Community Involvement from ContinYou which is sponsored by Kelloggs.  More details of the award can be found at www.breakfastclubplus.org.uk.   This is a fantastic achievement for the bar and the church.

First Stop was started in 2004 as a result of our Senior Pastor Tony Summerfield’s counseling work within the local senior schools. Tony was asked to help a young lad who was struggling at school due to difficulties at home.  It became apparent that the lad often went to school without having had any breakfast. As a result Tony challenged the church to start a free breakfast bar to help meet the needs of this lad and the many others also suffering. The local Marks and Spencers and Waitrose stores committed themselves to give food for free to the bar, and financial donations were received from many who wanted to make this vision happen.

Now over 20 children attend each morning and it provides a place of safety and a free breakfast for 11 to 18 year olds. This has enabled the church to demonstrate the Love of God in a practical way. We are very honored to receive this award as recognition for what God has done through us as a church to care for the vulnerable children of Hitchin. For more information contact Della Jackson, Facilities Manager, della.jackson@hcc.org.uk or visit www.hcc.org.uk
