‘Faithworks in the Community Weeks’ will give 1,000 people aged 14+ the chance to be agents for change within some of the most deprived inner-city wards in England. The weeks will run between July 26th – August 5th, bringing police, statutory agencies and faith communities together to provide local solutions to local needs within some of the deprived estates of Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Leeds and London. Teams of volunteers will be working with churches in the local area, undertaking work such as clearing rubbish, fitting security systems, working with asylum seekers, clearing canal pathways and other community-based activities geared towards using active faith as a means of regenerating deprived estates.
Jill Rowe, Oasis Youth Participation Manager, says:
"This is an exciting opportunity to do something this summer which will have a lasting impact and show that faith really does work in some of Britain’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods."
The venues for the Community Weeks have deliberately been chosen as areas suffering from social deprivation, high crime rates, high unemployment rates and low levels of income. The work undertaken by volunteers will contribute to the Government’s crime reduction strategy, with the express aim of lowering the level of recorded crime in these areas.
